Self-Introduction Self-Critique Blog

I watched my video three different times, once only looking at the video, once only listening to the audio, and the last time with both. This might sound rather odd, but it helped me to see if I was performing excess body movements. The audio, on the other hand, helped to see if I was clear enough to be understandably heard alone. After doing each of these, I'd rate myself 8/10.
Body Movements:
I improved on making eye contact, but I feel that I looked mostly at the camera, and not so much towards each side of the room. I adequately kept my stance and didn't fidget, which is an important part of any speech. However, I do feel that I used more hand gestures than I needed; some of which didn't really relate to the speech (such as switching the note cards in my hands). My visual aid helped in the speech but I feel I pointed back at it more than was needed, making it a slight distraction. It also distracted me personally, preventing me from making enough eye contact. I was glad that I did show some facial expressions within the speech, normally alongside hand gestures, which I thought went well and enhanced the speech.
Vocals:
I could hear myself easily and was surprised to find that I actually wasn't talking that fast. There were a few words I could have pronounced better, to be more understandable. I showed vocal clarity just as with the first one, even though it was a tad bit harder seeing as how it wasn't a story being orated.
Overall:
Overall, I feel I did a good job at completing the requirements for the speech, minus the fact that I was really close to 3:00 minutes (maybe even over by a few seconds). I think the cause of this was me adding a little bit more content to some of the points, out of noticing interest from the audience. As was demonstrated in the speech, though, I didn't allow myself enough wiggle room to fit it in successfully. Next time, I will make sure to give myself more room for addition in the speech. To improve next time, I won't overuse my visual aid, preventing it from cutting down on my eye contact with the audience. Also, it may be a better idea to reduce the time the picture is visible in the background. I will continue to use vocal clarity and speak clearly. I will attempt to use a few less hand gestures, but not completely and add more facial expressions to give more character to the presentation. Next time, I hope to come up with a more interesting grabber that's more in depth for the intro also. One thing I can say I was completely satisfied with was my little “thought” at the end, hopefully inspiring thought within a few audience members.

  1. It was pretty sweet how you chose to watch your video in a few different ways, I can see how that’d help you truly understand what you needed to work on. I can relate to how awkward it might be having a camera on you, but just try to relax and think about your audience not the camera, that’s only going to be watched by you. In my blog I also wrote how I switched my card in my hands a lot too, so I guess that just comes with practice. Your vocal clarity was right on, it’s always good to know that the people you’re speaking too can understand you. Just make sure you keep that up! Don’t want to get too confident. Another thing is the hand gestures, they’re good, if they make sense to use them. But also you should think about if you don’t have any, your speech might be a little bit dull. Otherwise keep it up you did well!

  2. Hey Tammy! First off I want to say I really enjoyed your speech! I have a similar geode at home on my shelf. Concerning stance, it looked very calm and collected overall, however (and I understand it's very strange) after looking back on it I could pick up on a little bit of eye contact with the camera. Maybe to improve on this you could practice this with friends and a webcam if you have one. Again just a thought, might help! I couldn't pick up on anything that negatively affected your speech delivery, tone and content went through very well. So keep doing what you're doing there!

  3. Hey Tammy,
So I must say I enjoyed your speech. I could tell how much you enjoyed your topic and for me that made me enjoy it and want to hear what you had to say.
As far as excess movements went, I honestly don't remember anything excessive or distracting, I honestly admit that I didn't even realize you were switching your notecards back and forth. You seemed relaxed.
Also, the looking back at the visiual aid, I know exactly what you mean! I did the exact same thing.
I think the best way to deal with both of these issues is simply by practice. It will also be alot easier now that you know what you were doing. But don't over practice that seems robotic.
Overall, I thought you did great! I really enjoyed your speech.

  4. Hey Tammy,
Your speech was great. If nothing else the fact that you were so passionate about your topic meant a lot as an audience member. Your vocals were clear and your stance showed that you were confident in what you were saying. Your eye contact was strong, especially for our first speech!
    Great job!
